Governor Katie Hobbs has ordered flags at all state buildings to be lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset on February 14, 2024 and on the day of interment, in honor of U.S. Marine Sergeant Alec Langen, who was one of the casualties of the February 6 helicopter crash during a training flight in California.
Sgt. Langen was assigned to the Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 361 “Flying Tigers”, Marine Aircraft Group 16, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing and was based at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California.
According to the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, Alec Langen enlisted in the Marine Corps on September 14, 2017, and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant on October 1, 2022. His decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and two Sea Service Deployment Ribbons.
Governor Hobbs issued the following statement:
“It is with great sorrow that we learned that Sergeant Alec Langen, of Chandler, was one of the five Marines killed during a training flight in California. We lift up his family, especially his wife Casey and his parents, Steven and Caryn Langen, and mourn alongside them for the loss of this talented and selfless young man, who spent his life in service to others.”
We will further communicate the date of interment once set.

“I am saddened to hear of the passing of Mayor Jason Kouts. He was a beloved leader of the Safford community, born and raised in the Gila Valley and spent his life in service to others. My deepest condolences go out to his family, loved ones and the residents of Safford. I’ve ordered flags at all state buildings be lowered to half-staff in his honor and memory on Friday, January 26 and on the day of interment, February 3," said Governor Katie Hobbs.

Flags are currently at half-staff in honor of Sandra Day O'Connor and should be raised to full staff at sunset on Tuesday., Dec. 19, the day of interment.
December 7th is Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day and we also want to honor and remember the 2,403 service members and civilians who were killed in the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. This year is the 82nd anniversary of that infamous day in US History, which is remembered every year on that date, since being designated as National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day by Congress in 1994. Flags fly at half-staff every year on this date to honor the victims.

Governor Hobbs has ordered flags at all state buildings to be lowered to half-staff immediately until sunset on the day of interment, as a mark of respect for the memory of retired Associate Justice Sandra Day O'Connor who passed away on Friday, Dec. 1. Day of interment will be announced at a later date. Governor Hobbs issued the following statement: "Justice Sandra Day O’Connor put people above all else and created an eternal legacy that will forever be ingrained in the fibers of our state and nation’s history.On behalf of the State of Arizona, I send my deepest sympathies to her family, loved ones & everyone touched by her trailblazing legacy."
