Flags are at full staff.

Governor Katie Hobbs has ordered flags at all state buildings to be lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Sunday, April 14, 2024 in memory of Army veteran and long time public servant Paul Babbitt Jr. who passed away on April 4, 2024. 

Paul spent nearly 30 years serving the citizens of Northern Arizona in a variety of local government roles including on the Flagstaff City Council, and as Vice Mayor and Mayor. He was appointed to the Coconino County Board of Supervisors in 1986 and served until 2004. He was involved in the health and vitality of his local community and had a genuine love for people. 

Governor Hobbs issued the following statement: 

“I am saddened to hear of the passing of Paul Babbitt Jr., a true Arizona statesman whose leadership and commitment to his local community will be remembered for generations to come. I have ordered flags to fly at half-staff on the day of his interment to honor his life and legacy.”

Governor Katie Hobbs has ordered flags at all state buildings to be lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Tuesday, April 2, 2024 and on the day of interment, in honor of Tucson police officer Adam Buckner, who died in the line of duty while in route to an emergency on March 31.  

Officer Buckner has served as a Tucson police officer since November 2021 after starting his career in New Orleans in 2017. 

Governor Hobbs issued the following statement: 

“We mourn the sudden loss of Officer Buckner and our thoughts are with his family and the entire community of Tucson. This is a solemn reminder of the selfless service of officers and first responders who put their lives on the line everyday to keep our communities safe. I have called for flags to be lowered to half-staff to in honor of Officer Buckner's sacrifice.” 

We will further communicate the date of interment once set.

Governor Katie Hobbs has ordered flags at all state buildings to be lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Monday, February 26, 2024 for the interment of U.S. Marine Sergeant Alec Langen, who was one of the casualties of the February 6 helicopter crash during a training flight in California.

Governor Katie Hobbs has ordered flags at all state buildings to be lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset on February 14, 2024 and on the day of interment, in honor of U.S. Marine Sergeant Alec Langen, who was one of the casualties of the February 6 helicopter crash during a training flight in California. 

 

Sgt. Langen was assigned to the Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 361 “Flying Tigers”, Marine Aircraft Group 16, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing and was based at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California. 

 

According to the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, Alec Langen enlisted in the Marine Corps on September 14, 2017, and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant on October 1, 2022. His decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and two Sea Service Deployment Ribbons.

 

Governor Hobbs issued the following statement: 

 

“It is with great sorrow that we learned that Sergeant Alec Langen, of Chandler, was one of the five Marines killed during a training flight in California. We lift up his family, especially his wife Casey and his parents, Steven and Caryn Langen, and mourn alongside them for the loss of this talented and selfless young man, who spent his life in service to others.”

Governor Katie Hobbs has ordered flags at all state buildings to be lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Saturday, February 3, 2024 (day of interment), in honor of Safford Mayor Jason Kouts, who passed away on January 24, 2024. 

 
“I am saddened to hear of the passing of Mayor Jason Kouts. He was a beloved leader of the Safford community, born and raised in the Gila Valley and spent his life in service to others. My deepest condolences go out to his family, loved ones and the residents of Safford.  I’ve ordered flags at all state buildings be lowered to half-staff in his honor and memory on Friday, January 26 and on the day of interment, February 3," said Governor Katie Hobbs.
